Guitar Effects

Although often you hear people asking 'What pedals do you use?' or 'What effects do you use' - these are silly questions because what you use will depend on what exaclty it is you are trying to do. For example, even though you may be supposed to be using some processor in the effects loop of your amp - running it in FRONT of your amp will change the sound dramatically. This can be very effective in creating heavily delayed sounds. In other cases where you wish to blend the effect with the 'thru' sound of the amp, it may be much better to use an effects loop - AGAIN it all depends on what you are trying to do. Now to make a great stable setup for live, you need to figure out which sounds and how many different ones you need to have. Then you can build the rig according to those parameters.

I like to use Midi switching to allow for multiple 'Loops' in my signal path, where desired effects units or pedals are switched on and left on, then simply have the loops that run TO those units being turned on and off with a midi foot controller. I have touched on this in the post about Billy Corgan's rig, and will go over this again shortly.
